Patna, Dec 8 (IANS) Police in Bihar rescued at least 5,000 endangered turtles and arrested two people Friday.
The turtles were found in bags and were being smuggled from Aurangabad district to Uttar Pradesh. Police impounded a vehicle that was carrying the creatures. This is the third case in the region in last four months.
Police seized the turtles during a routine check of vehicles on the Grand Trunk road.
Police said the turtles would be released soon in a river with the help of wildlife officials.
Turtles are often hunted for their skin and the meat is sold at a premium at local fish markets.
