Vietnam holds its First National Scientific Workshop on Amphibians and Reptiles

On the 28th of November 2009 Vietnam held its ?First National Workshop on Amphibians and Reptiles?.  The one day event was organized and supported by Hue Teaching University and the Institute of Ecological and Biological Resources (IEBR) and held in Hue, central Vietnam.  The workshop was attended by representatives of most universities in Vietnam as well as national research institutions and a number of conservation NGO?s including Wildlife at Risk (WAR) and the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) of the Cleveland Metroparks zoo.

The first national scientific workshop on amphibians and reptiles in VietnamDuring the workshop sixteen presentations made reporting primarily on recent surveys of amphibians and reptiles in protected areas in Vietnam, while some focused on physiology or captive ecology and behavior in relation to farming.

During the workshop the ATP presented findings on the radio telemetry study on the Keeled Box Turtle (Cuora mouhotii) in Cuc Phuong National Park, as well as delivered a presentation on the role of research in conservation with a focus on Rafetus swinhoei in Vietnam.

This first workshop proved to be an important event,  bringing together members of the herpetological research and conservation communities in Vietnam.

We hope that in the future, the workshop will have served to provide a useful basis for increased discussion on conservation and to explore the opportunities for conservation focused research throughout the country.
