Turtle Shipment Seized in Da Nang

Rangers from the Da Nang Forest Protection Department stopped a bus in Lien Chieu District of Da Nang City and confiscated 50 kg of wildlife.  The animals was comprised of 20 kg of rat snakes (Ptyas korros) and 34 turtles (30 kg) including six Indochinese box turtles (Cuora picturata), ten keeled box turtles (Cuora mouhotii), four elongated tortoises (Indotestudo elongata) and 14 Asian striped ? necked leaf turtles (Cyclemys pulchristriata).

The bus reportedly originated in Nha Trang City of Khanh Hoa Province, and was heading through the city north to Ha Tinh Province.  The snakes were released in a local forest and the turtles were turned over to the Cuc Phuong Turtle Conservation Center (TCC).  The driver of the bus was fined 11 million VND (~$700 USD) for violating wildlife protection laws.  Both the rat snakes and the elongated tortoises were protected under Decree 48 at the time of the incident.
